Server monitoring: metrics that help you act

NUXOA Redaktion · 7 October 2026 · Hosting

A server can respond to a ping while its application has stopped working. Conversely, a brief CPU spike is not necessarily an incident. Useful monitoring connects technical measurements with user workflows and clear ownership of every alert.

Start with the service

First check whether the service is reachable and returns a meaningful response. For a website, response time and essential functions matter alongside HTTP status. For file storage, a controlled read operation may be more informative than a reachable login page. Use suitable test accounts and ensure checks cannot place real orders or send real messages.

Observe response times over a period. One fast request can conceal slow operations experienced by other users. Compare typical results with slower requests and check whether patterns correspond to particular times or scheduled jobs.

Read resource metrics in context

CPU, memory and disk usage help explain causes and upcoming capacity problems. Look for sustained CPU load, memory pressure or steadily filling partitions. High memory usage can also reflect useful file caching. A fixed threshold without system context can therefore produce unnecessary alerts.

For example, a partition has 60 GB free and grows by around 5 GB per day. Without intervention, it would theoretically fill in twelve days. An early warning gives you time to clean up or expand storage. Also watch for unexpected jumps caused by logs or failing background jobs.

Every alert needs an action

Separate active incidents from planned work. An unavailable customer-facing service needs a different response from a slowly growing database. Give each alert an owner, initial investigation steps and an escalation path. Monitor the monitoring system too, so a failed notification channel does not remain unnoticed.

Include backups in this overview: the last successful job, the age of the newest backup and transfer failures. A successful job does not replace a restore test. NUXOA includes monitoring in managed packages; project-specific application checks and ownership of business acceptance tests should be agreed for the environment.
